Why did French become the French it is today? In 1539, King Francis I decreed that, replacing Latin, all future decrees and official documents would be in Parisian French. The Provenccal speaking south complained, but with little long term effect.1 Why isn't Catalan speaking Spain part of France? Catalan is, or at least was in the 1300s, closer to any French language than to Castilian or Gallego, a result principally of the particular Germanic tribes which settled in each area after the destruction of the western Roman Empire2 . The Pyrenees are the answer, separating people by mountains, dictating their political futures.
