
Secession: Mongolia
The country of Mongolia was part of Manchu China. With the help of of Russia, Outer Mongolia succesfully seceded at the birth of the Republic of China in 1911,
Not all of Mongolian regions succesfully seceded.
In 1917, in a Japanese sponsored conference held in Siberia, resulted in a decision to create a pan-Mongol state including Outer Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, and Buryatia (a large Russian autonomous region on the Mongolian border). Buryat is the other language in the Khalkha-Buryat family that contains Mongolian.
The Chinese, having settled their early troubles, reconquered Mongolia in 1919. The White Russians drove out the Chinese from important centers in 1921. Within months, Soviet troop backed Mongolians took the country, yet again.
In 1954 Inner Mongolia became the People's Republic of China's first "Autonomous Region."
Today Mongolia is about 10% Mongolian, which perhaps, along with its autonomous status, Mongolia hasn't had any serious uprising in a long time. Compare this with Tibet, which is 90% Tibetan, and has seen numerous conflicts from in the fifty years before 2008.
