Terrorism: The Irish Republican Army

The Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and Breton languages are in the Celtic subgroup of the Indo-European family, while English is in the Germanic.

Interestingly, Brittany, for most of the 17th and 18th centuries the poorest and most backward area of France, which is otherwise inhabited by Romance language speakers, was ruled for hundreds of years in conjunction with Cornwall.

There have been many, many wars between the English and the Celtic in the last millenium.

Although Irish has been practically removed from the public sphere in Ireland (2,600,000 English speakers versus 260,000 Irish speakers according to Ethnologue), the roots of the conflict predate this, and the modern relative peace and calm of Ireland might, in part, be a function of the increased linguistic unity with Great Britain.
