Race? The German Romantics must have been ignoring a lot of history when they declared race was important. Gibbon writes of the great period of Roman Imperial history, listing five Emperors. Two were Spanish, and one Gaulish. I guess the Manchu and Mongol dynasties in China were insignificant. Wasn't Napoleon a bit Corsican (in actuality, 100%) and weren't his soldiers French (they were).
